A leading position in waste management

In Europe, the Netherlands has established a leading position in waste management. Currently, 78% of our waste is recycled and the remaining waste is generally used for energy production. Although this is already a major achievement, the Roadmap to a Resource-Efficient Europe calls for a more fundamental transition.

Subjects

National Waste Management Plan (NWMP)

The NWMP covers all waste to which the Environmental Management Act applies. This Act stipulates all authorities must take into account the NWMP when dealing with aspects of waste management.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)

EPR places the responsibility for financing and usually also organising the waste management of their products on producers. This encourages them to make more sustainable choices before they put products on the market.

Circular Design

Circular design as the starting point for producers, consumers and materials handlers is a way of preparing society for the circular future. This is essential if we are to make the transition to a circular economy in the Netherlands.

Circular Procurement

The Socially Responsible Procurement (SRP) team stimulates circular procurement in the Netherlands and worldwide on behalf of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. The focus is on the IT, textiles, facility management and infrastructure sectors.

VANG Buitenshuis

VANG is the Dutch acronym for From Waste to Raw Material, and that is what this program is about. VANG Buitenshuis focuses on reducing and preventing waste at companies in the office, retail and service sector. Among other things, the program supports companies with knowledge and practical experience.

VANG Household Waste (HHW)

The VANG HHW programme was developed to help municipalities to take the steps needed towards a circular economy. In years to come, the focus will be on even better segregation of residual waste and improving the quality of individual waste streams.

Littering of rivers and surrounding areas

How can plastic waste in rivers and their surrounding areas be avoided? The focus of the programme ‘Plastic-free rivers’ is monitoring micro- and macroplastics in rivers and it tackles plastic waste in rivers with a source-based approach.
