A circular economy: the passport to a sustainable society
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management is accelerating the transition to a circular economy in the Netherlands. An economy in which we are using ever fewer primary raw materials, preventing the creation of litter and rubbish where possible and promoting high-quality reuse of raw materials from waste. That means we are contributing to a clean, green and pleasant living environment and a sustainable society for future generations.
A broad view with attention for many sectors

We are working towards a broad, common ambition: a circular economy in 2050, which will enable us to hit the climate targets. We are starting up pilot projects in many sectors and, with other authorities and the market, learning which measures work best. Together, we are developing policy that contributes the most to the circular objectives and, at the same time, is innovative and practicable.
Encouraging circular working practices

Together with companies and other authorities, we encourage circular design of products and high-quality reuse of resources and raw materials. Mainly in the textile and plastic sectors, but in other sectors as well. We believe in the chain-wide approach as a way of working. We encourage prevention of waste and, where this is not possible, deal with it effectively.
Accessible rules and knowledge

We advise on new legislation for the circular economy and waste policy. We make these measures accessible to government agencies and companies. We share the knowledge, results and practical examples that our work generates through websites, training courses and networking sessions.
Monitoring

We gather data and develop measuring methods. By working with our own data, we can report independent of the market.
Circularity in the Netherlands demands partnership

Our knowledge and experience with circularity makes the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management an important partner for other government agencies, companies and social organisations. By working together, we can all accelerate the process of realising a circular economy.
